Please join the FVJC Religious School Family Education Program on January 17, 2010, as we welcome Mrs. Elizabeth Kaplan, FVJC member and Holocaust Survivor, and Mrs. Dodi Cole, recipient of Yad Vashem's Righteous Among the Nations award. They will share their personal stories about their experiences during World War II. The opportunity to hear from people who are willing and able to share living witness is increasingly rare; we are extraordinarily grateful to Mrs. Kaplan and Mrs. Cole for their willingness to speak with us.
Students in the 6th and 7th grade and their parents will have a private audience with our guests at 9AM. Adult guests and students in grades 6 and up are invited to come at 9:45 for light refreshments, followed by our speakers at 10:00 and conclude no later than 12:00 with a brief Memorial Service. Please RSVP to Terry Wolfisch Cole at wolfisch@sbcglobal.net at your earliest convenience.
In January, the Social Action Committee, along with the religious school, is sponsoring a “Soup’s On!” canned or boxed, kosher soup drive benefiting JFS. Soups must be kosher or they cannot be accepted. To assist you in your shopping, click here for a list of kosher soups. Whether you shop at Target or Trader Joe's, Stop-n-Shop or Shaw's, there are kosher soups for sale at all stores. Please note that NO Campbell's or Progresso soups are kosher. Please look for the beautifully decorated collection containers and posters made by the 5th and 4th graders, respectively, under the direction of our talented art teacher, Chrissy Bonchick.

Join us for a presentation about how to deal with the emotional challenges involving with aging, facilitated by Chuck Wolfe and Kathy Lucas on January 10 from 9:30 – 11:00 AM
Have you begun preparing for the inevitable transitions we all face as we age? Are you already dealing with aging parents who no longer can live alone without aid of some kind? Have your parents and you talked about issues such as possible changes in living arrangements, estate planning, government assistance, and keeping fit and healthy? Have you talked with them about what they want for themselves as they enter the final stages of life’s journey? These topics, and others like them, are often difficult to discuss. If you wait, though, the opportunity to discuss them may disappear.
Kathy Lucas and Chuck Wolfe have begun a business venture to help people successfully handle these and other similar issues. Their goal is to provide meaningful content about the topics listed above along with a unique approach to helping people to manage their own emotions and their parents’ emotions successfully. Chuck's tool, the Emotion RoadmapTM has proven to be very helpful for dealing with all types of challenging emotional situations. Consider the following:
1. What do you do and say when you first realize that Mom and Dad are no longer able to do what they need to do to maintain their home?
2. What happens when they become dangerous driving?
3. If they no longer are able to drive and they need to go regularly to visit doctors, who is going to drive them?
4. When they are no longer capable of keeping up with bill payments and other record keeping who will be trusted to manage their accounts?
5. How do you talk with them about estate planning without making them and you uncomfortable?
6. How do you help them keep their dignity, and you keep your sanity, as you are dealing with them and all your other family, work, and personal situations where you are also committed?
7. When they are ready to move into assisted living or a nursing home, who decides which place? Is it based on proximity to your home, ratings by government agencies, friendliness of the staff, other criteria?
8. How do you deal with caregivers in assisted living and nursing homes when you are not satisfied with the care your loved ones are getting?
9. What do you do if your siblings are unwilling to share the responsibilities?
Our facilitators will share their recommendations and demonstrate for you how the Emotion RoadmapTM can be of assistance with these challenging issues.
